and a leader

Last summer Kristina C., a freshman
at George W. Hewlett High School, attended
the National Junior Leaders Conference
at Catholic University in Washington,
D.C.
The program, sponsored by LeadAmerica,
selects academically talented middle-schoolers
who demonstrate leadership and involvement
in community service. The one-week
conference offers hands-on experience
in areas such as government, diplomacy,
national security, business and health
care. Students participate in interactive
workshops, field trips and activities
to develop leadership, effective communication,
conflict resolution, team building
and time-management skills.
"It was a great experience," Kristina
said. "I made a lot of friends
and learned a lot about government
and leadership qualities, like knowing
when to step up [to take the lead]
and when to step down."
Kristina plays clarinet in the school
band and is a member of Model Congress.
She wants to try out for the swim or
tennis team next year.
She also volunteers doing clerical
work at Hewlett House, a nonprofit
organization that offers support for
cancer patients and their families.
