NEW
YORK, NY – High
school students attending the
Congressional Student Leadership
Conference on Media & Journalism
got a surprise last week when
they received an invitation
to visit CBS The Early Show,
broadcast from the deck of
the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space
Museum and see legendary bands
Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire
perform.
The
CSLC on Media & Journalism
is a 10-day youth leadership
program that was held on the
campus of Fordham University
in New York. The high school
students representing 21 states
attended the conference.
"I never thought I would
see Earth Wind & Fire in
person," said Jenna Black,
a high school junior from Virginia.
Jenna and other students attending
the youth leadership conference
were pleasantly surprised at
the last-minute addition to
their conference schedule. “Pinch
me! I can’t believe this
is happening,” said Risa
Mitchell, a junior from Texas.
At
the CSLC on Media & Journalism,
students explored print, broadcast
and digital media. In a hands-on
learning environment, they
put theory into practice by
going into the field to research
and report a story. The program
included lectures and discussions
with leading journalists, media
figures and educators. Students
also participated in interactive
leadership workshops. And this
year, the program included
a surprise visit to the CBS
Early Show on location at the
Intrepid, and a chance to hear
two of America’s best-loved
bands, Earth, Wind & Fire
and Chicago! The bands performed
as part of The Early Show's
Summer Concert Series.
LeadAmerica
Program Director, Broderick
Williams was excited to give
students attending the program
a chance to experience The
Early Show, visit the Intrepid,
and hear two incredible bands – all
at once! “Today was
one of those days that you
tell your grandkids about,” said
Williams.
